Hello everyone! Today, I, the editor from an EVA foam manufacturer, am back at work after a 2-day break. Today, I heard a colleague explaining to a customer how to process a custom-shaped EVA foam and how to shape it into the required product. I’d like to share it with you as well.

1. First, let's understand what custom-shaped foam is. Custom-shaped foam, in simple terms, refers to foam with irregular shapes, not fixed dimensions (length, width, height). It is a type of foam insert made based on the product's size.

2. So, what are the methods for processing custom-shaped foam? In general, there are 3 main methods, but the suitable one depends on the actual product situation, so it’s not one-size-fits-all.

2.1 Mold Stamping Processing: This method involves decomposing the drawing or product of the custom-shaped foam. Since the height may vary in different places, we need to stamp each section to the same height, and then process the areas with different heights, either by pasting or backfilling. This process might require several molds and manual fitting. Manual fitting could result in uneven and less aesthetically pleasing seams, depending on the customer’s quality requirements.

2.2 Precision Engraving or Milling Custom-Shaped Foam: This process mainly uses CNC engraving machines to perform integrated processing and shaping. Based on the product's size drawing, programming is done to convert the drawing into a machine-readable program, and then the CNC engraving machine follows this program to execute the operations. CNC engraving machines come in 2-axis, 4-axis, and 6-axis models, meaning they can process up to 6 products simultaneously. Of course, this depends on the size of the custom-shaped foam. You can check out some real-life examples of CNC engraving on custom-shaped foam.

2.3 The most common custom-shaped foam processing methods on the market are these two. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Mold forming is simpler, requires more manual labor, and has lower costs. CNC engraving or milling custom-shaped foam is more complex but looks more high-end with an integrated design. However, it is also more costly.
